The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology and the Drexel College of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science are pleased to announce the official launch of the Drexel University Computing Academy (DUCA). The program kicks off Sunday, June 28, 2009 with an opening ceremony for students and parents.Twenty-five students will be formally welcomed to the program by DUCA’s Executive Director Thomas J. Smith, Academic Director Jeffrey Popyack, and Director of Residential Life Miguel Vargas, as well as College of Engineering Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies Anthony Lowman and iSchool Dean David E. Fenske at the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center.“These students are taking advantage of a wonderful educational opportunity, one which Drexel faculty and staff have spent months planning and fine-tuning,” said Fenske. “It is truly a pleasure to meet the students of DUCA’s inaugural class.”DUCA is a five-week, residential summer learning experience at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Through DUCA, students share an authentic college experience, exploring information technology and computer science through interactive classes, group projects and labs while living in a dorm, eating cafeteria food, and, best of all, making new friends. The program was developed jointly by the iSchool at Drexel and the Department of Computer Science after the cancellation of the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Information, Society and Technology due to sweeping statewide budget cuts. Drexel served as a hosting institution for the program for a decade, and thereby recognized the value of the program and how its focus on scholarship and leadership helped students build foundations for success as future IT leaders in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1892, The iSchool at Drexel educates students in information science and technology at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels and features Drexel University’s Cooperative Education program. The department recently established a joint gaming curriculum and research lab. CS currently offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees.
