The NCAA announced that the Drexel University men’s basketball team has received the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program public recognition award for the second straight season. Drexel is one of just 33 Division I men’s basketball teams out of 341 schools and one of only two schools in the Colonial Athletic Association to earn the award.“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our men’s basketball team in the classroom,” Drexel Athletics Director Dr. Eric Zillmer said. “It is a true testament to the dedication of our student-athletes and our staff that the program has been able to earn this award the past two seasons.”The NCAA is honoring Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of a broad Division I academic reform effort. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The calculation of APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation figures. It provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams that received these awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000. Drexel’s score was 983.Multi-year APR scores for all 6,110 Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced on May 6. The announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.Drexel has graduated every player who has exhausted his eligibility under Head Coach Bruiser Flint, who has just completed his seventh season at the school.
