Bernard Kolman (1932-2018)

Kolman, faculty member at Drexel University for 34 years including time as chair of the department, died October 11 at the age of 86. He authored or co-authored 16 textbooks on a range of subjects from college algebra to a survey of Lie groups and Lie algebras (co-authored with Johan G.F. Belinfante) and was president of the Eastern Pennsylvania-Delaware (EPaDEL) section of the MAA from 1985 to 1987. Kolman was born in Havana, Cuba and came to the U.S. in 1947. He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965 under the direction of Morikuni Goto. Kolman had taken a position at Drexel a year earlier, and retired from the university in 1998. He was an AMS member since 1965.
