Defining Identity and the Changing Scope of Culture in the Digital Age

Friday, May 4, 2018

4:00 PM-6:00 PM

CCM External Colloquium featuring Alison Novak, PhD (Rowan University) and Imaani El-Burki, PhD (Lehigh University)

The volume, Defining Identity and the Changing Scope of Culture in the Digital Age, explores a multitude of topics pertaining to self-hood, expression, human interaction, and perceptions of civilization and culture in an age where technology is integrated into every facet of everyday lives.

Highlighting issues of race, ethnicity, and gender in digital culture, interpersonal and computer-mediated communication, pop culture, social media, and the digitization of knowledge, this reference publication is designed for use by scholars and graduate-level students interested in the fluid and rapidly evolving norms of identity and culture through digital media.

The talk will discuss and provide guidance around the co-editing process. Within this discussion we will explain the development of our topic, the creation of a proposal for the publisher and the process of choosing and editing contributions. Finally, Novak and El-Burki will provide an overview of the contributions to their volume that engage concepts of intersectionality.
