11th Street Community Makes Botanical Art at Porch Light Open Studio

December 1, 2012

On Friday, November 30, another Mural Arts Program Porch Light Initiative open studio day was held at 11th Street Health Family Health Services. There, members of the 11th Street community continued work on an art project that they had previously started, which involved outlining different herbal plants with medicinal value and health benefits onto tracing paper. Some of the community members even wrote inspirational messages on their tracings, mostly pertaining to the importance of good health and family. To conclude the open studio session, lead artist Ben Volta discussed how the mural process is moving forward. The Porch Light Initiative is still waiting to hear back from the Philadelphia Housing Authority about permissions to place murals on nearby buildings in the community.

The next two open studios are schedule for January 4 and 25 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. All are welcome and no previous artistic experience is required. Members of the 11th Street and College of Nursing and Health Professions communities are encouraged to participate in an open studio to learn more about the Porch Light Initiative.
