Winter term is already winding down, and there’s much to do to prepare for spring! Here are a few key happenings and deadlines to keep in mind this month:

Dining and Housing

Drexel Campus Dining — Dining Dollars roll over from winter term to spring term when a student is enrolled in a dining plan in both terms. For more information, or to enroll in a spring term dining plan, contact Drexel Campus Dining at campusdining@drexel.edu or call 215.895.6095.

University Housing — Upper-class housing applications are now open for returning students.

Recyclemania

Once again, Drexel University is participating in RecycleMania, a friendly, nationwide recycling competition among colleges and universities. Throughout the months of February and March, we’re tracking the amount of paper, cardboard, aluminum, glass, plastic, cell phones and computer equipment* recycled on our campuses so we can be benchmarked against the other participating institutions.

Drexel boasts a robust, single-stream recycling program that makes it easy and convenient to recycle most plastic, glass, aluminum, paper and cardboard waste in University-operated properties. In late February and early March, Drexel will host collection events on all three campuses where students and employees can dispose of more cumbersome items, such as computers. What Can You Do?

It is everyone’s responsibility to help keep Drexel green. Here are some steps you can take to boost recycling on campus:

• Get to know Drexel Recycling. Did you know Drexel practices single-stream recycling? No need to sort your paper from plastic — it all goes to the same place. Visit drexel.edu/recycling for information and resources on what is (and is not) recycled at Drexel, how and where to recycle various materials, and how recyclables are processed.
• Tell your friends. Print out the Drexel Recycling Guide [PDF] and place it in your office, residence hall, trash room, common area, etc., and encourage others to recycle items they may not have realized were recyclable.
• Start spring cleaning early. Take this opportunity to de-clutter and properly dispose of unwanted items you’ve been meaning to recycle for weeks. The more you recycle during the next eight weeks, the better Drexel’s numbers will be.
• Come to a RecycleMania Collection Event. Paper, cell phones, computer equipment* and plastic, glass and aluminum containers will be accepted for recycling at the following dates, times and locations.

Queen Lane

• Where: Outside the main entrance in front of the flagpole
• When: Feb. 27, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Center City

• Where: New College Building, Geary Lobby
• When: March 6, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

University City

• Where: Recreation Center Lobby, 33rd and Market Street
• When: March 7, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

* The only way to ensure data stored on a hard drive is properly deleted is to overwrite it with pseudorandom numbers using a program called DBAN (see Drexel IT DBAN FAQ for more information, and contact security@drexel.edu if you need assistance). Drexel Green will be accepting old computers and other electronic devices for recycling at its three RecycleMania collection events, but it is the department’s responsibility to ensure the hard drive is properly deleted. Drexel Green will not accept any devices for recycling that have not been properly and securely wiped.
