Student Co-op Experiences
Emara Gordon
Emara Gordon is a third-year digital media and virtual production major in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.
Tell us about the project you were involved in.
Emara: Along with two other co-op students, I helped to virtually recreate a local botanical garden in the Unreal Engine, a 3D virtual production tool.
What did you learn by working with external partners?
Emara: This experience furthered my skills in 3D modeling and photogrammetry.
For you personally – what is the value of participating in projects that involve external partners?
Emara: Corporate partnerships provide insight into what goes on in professional industries that students may otherwise not know about prior to graduating and entering the workforce. A lot of things happen behind the scenes, and it’s very interesting to experience this firsthand.
How has this opportunity impacted your Drexel experience?
Emara: Before my co-op with DSI, I was unsure if I truly wanted to pursue the major I am in. This experience solidified my interest in digital media and virtual production and bolstered my confidence in this decision.
What was your favorite part about participating in this opportunity?
Emara: I loved meeting people! Not only did I get the chance to work with some amazing colleagues who helped grow my skillset, but I also got to meet with people whose visions for the project inspired me to think about what else I could do in this field going forward.
How has this project shaped your academic career beyond co-op?
Emara: The skills I learned during this co-op helped me in my coursework. If I hadn’t completed this co-op, my academics would reflect that as I learned so much and got hands-on experience. I also had a new network of professionals to talk to when I had any questions or problems with assignments, and they were always willing to help me out beyond the co-op experience.
Did participating in this project affect your career interests?
Emara: This co-op showed me that the skills I’m learning will be useful to me in the field I want to go into and made me want to pursue something similar as a full-time job once I graduate. I really enjoyed the experience I had and would love to be able to make it my career.
