Drexel faculty mentor: Sorin Siegler

Sergio Machaca graduated from Drexel University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Magna Cum Laude, Honors with Distinction). During his time at Drexel, he participated in the Hess Engineering Scholars program and was an active member of Drexel ASME. As a sophomore, he became involved in biomechanics research with Dr. Sorin Siegler and completed his senior design project, a six-degree-of-freedom robotic ankle platform, with the Biomechanics Laboratory. In 2018, Sergio was selected as an Alternate for the Fulbright U.S. Student program to conduct medical robotics research at the Technical University of Munich research hospital. He is currently a Mechanical Engineering PhD student at Johns Hopkins University, working with Dr. Jeremy Brown in the Haptics and Medical Robotics Laboratory. His research focuses on surgical skill assessment for novice surgeons using the da Vinci medical robot and advancing robotic surgical training with novel haptic modalities. In 2019, he received the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
