Nyheim Plasma Institute of Drexel University Receives $3.8 Million Grant from EPA for Innovative Project to Destroy Harmful HFCs Using Non-Thermal Plasma Technology
June 20, 2024
Dr. Christopher Sales from C&J Nyheim Plasma Institute of Drexel University is leading a groundbreaking project to revolutionize the destruction of HFCs, utilizing a combination of Liquid Injection Incineration (LII) and Non-Thermal Gliding Arc Plasmatron (GAP) technologies. The project aims to create a portable and efficient method for eliminating HFCs from waste oil residuals from refrigerant reclamation facilities.
Key aspects of the project include constructing a lab-scale LII for initial testing, conducting pilot-scale tests to optimize performance, and ensuring emissions comply with local, state, and federal regulations and standards. The initiative also emphasizes community engagement and environmental justice, ensuring that disadvantaged communities are involved in the decision-making process and benefit from the project's outcomes.
This innovative approach not only aims to significantly reduce harmful emissions but also sets the stage for the widespread adoption of cutting-edge technology in the fight against climate change.
Other individuals from NPI involved in this EPA project are Drs. Alexander Fridman, Alexander Rabinovich, and Jinjie He. Additional collaborators from Drexel University include Dr. Mira Olson from The Environmental Collaboratory and Dr. Ezra Wood from the Drexel Chemistry Department. For more information visit
