M. Louise Carpenter Gloeckner, MD Research Fellowship

The M. Louise Carpenter Gloeckner, MD Research Fellowship is offered annually by the Legacy Center at Drexel University College of Medicine. A $4,000 award is offered to one applicant for self-directed research using the Center's Women in Medicine Collection. Research may begin on or after June 1 and may extend up to 6 weeks.

This award was established in memory of M. Louise Carpenter Gloeckner, MD by her husband Frederick Gloeckner in recognition of her key leadership role in the medical profession. This is a competitive annual award open to scholars, students and general researchers.

In addition to materials related to the history of the Woman's Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania, the collections have particular strengths in the history of women in medicine, nursing, medical missionaries, the American Medical Women's Association, American Women's Hospital Service, and other women in medicine organizations. The majority of the collections fall within the period 1850 to the present.

The Drexel University College of Medicine Legacy Center / Library Company of Philadelphia Fellow in the History of Women and Medicine supports research on topics related to the history of women's medicine and women in medicine in both the Legacy Center and the Library Company of Philadelphia. The annual fellowship offers a $2,000 award to one applicant for self-directed research using complementary collections at both repositories.

The Library Company, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731 and located in Center City Philadelphia, holds over half a million rare books and graphics that are capable of supporting research in a variety of fields and disciplines relating to the history of America and the Atlantic world in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Its collections have strengths in the history of medicine, including the literature of popular health and homoeopathy, and also in women's history up to about 1900. This is an annual Fellowship for any one-month period between June 1 and May 31. To apply for the Fellowship, please follow instructions for short-term fellowship applications on the Library Company website and submit by March 1.
