Environmental and Occupational Health doctoral candidate Madison Raposa, MS will be defending her dissertation entitled Managing the Mental Load​: A Mixed Methods Study of Firefighter Mental Health, Safety Climate, and Organizational Interventions.

Madison examined data collected from the most recent wave of the Fire service Organizational Culture of Safety (FOCUS) survey. She conducted three studies to assess multiple specific aims:

• Aim 1: She conducted a descriptive analysis of the FOCUS 3.0 survey wave with emphasis on new leadership and mental health modules
• Aim 2: She investigated mental health within the 3.0 survey sample and differences by individual- and department-level characteristics, uncovering the relationship between safety climate and mental health 
• Aim 3: She conducted qualitative interviews to examine how fire departments are dealing with mental health and burnout among their members
