Breaking the Metagame: 17 Seconds of DotA 2

The ExCITe Center at Drexel University, October 21, 2014

Dota 23:30-5:00pm

In 2012, Valve held a million dollar DotA 2

competition at The International, during which occurred "The Play", a 17-second fight sequence and monumental upset between the teams Na'Vi of Ukraine and iG of China. "Breaking The Metagame: 17 Seconds of DotA 2" is a talk presented by the Entrepreneurial Game Studio, hosted by the ExCITe Center, and led by Stephanie Boluk (assistant professor, Pratt Institute) and Patrick LeMieux (Ph.D. candidate, Duke University) that will explore how this brief teamfight occurred and managed to break the metagame. In this discussion, participants will explore the history of the term "metagame" and its applications in other areas of gaming, from Cold War game theory to Magic: The Gathering, as it is understood and analyzed from a variety of perspectives.

This talk is open to the public, so come out and enjoy the discussion with us on October 21st!
