Founded in 2012, Drexel University’s Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center was established as a bold experiment in interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together researchers, artists, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to explore how technology and creativity can address real-world challenges. As one of the first major initiatives supporting Drexel’s vision for an Innovation Neighborhood in West Philadelphia, the Center opened in an 11,000-square-foot collaborative workspace at 3401 Market Street. Under the founding leadership of Dr. Youngmoo Kim, ExCITe was designed to dissolve traditional academic boundaries by creating a shared environment where ideas from science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) could intersect through research, education, and public engagement.

From its earliest days, the Center supported pioneering projects that demonstrated the power of transdisciplinary collaboration—from rehabilitation games for children with cerebral palsy and immersive digital performance experiences to urban sensing initiatives and advanced visualization research. It also became home to unique facilities such as the Shima Seiki Haute Technology Lab and the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics, creating opportunities for faculty, students, and industry partners to work side by side on emerging technologies. These early efforts established ExCITe as a place where innovative ideas could move rapidly from concept to prototype while fostering new partnerships across the University and throughout the Philadelphia region.

Over the past decade, the ExCITe Center has continued to evolve alongside Drexel’s expanding commitment to civic engagement and experiential learning. Today, it serves as a university-wide hub for research groups, educational programs, maker initiatives, entrepreneurship, and community partnerships focused on digital equity, creative technologies, and public impact. The Center has launched and supported initiatives ranging from STEAM education and student innovation programs to the nationally recognized Digital Navigators program, while continuing to host public events, workshops, and collaborative research that connect the University with neighborhoods across Philadelphia. Guided by the belief that meaningful innovation emerges from diverse perspectives and strong community partnerships, the ExCITe Center remains a catalyst for collaborative discovery and a cornerstone of Drexel's mission to create knowledge that improves lives.
