Placement and Evaluation
IEP Class and Level Placement
All new students will be required to take a placement test in order to determine their language proficiency level. In their first week of classes, students take in-class diagnostics. After reviewing the in-class diagnostics, an instructor may decide a student should be moved to a different level. Instructors will discuss class and level changes with the Associate Director of Programs.
If students wish to change classes or levels, they must first notify their instructor. Final decisions on placement will be made at the end of the first week of classes. This placement and any additional changes will be made by the Associate Director of Programs. Students may not move to another class without permission. Students may not go directly to the Associate Director of Programs to request class or level changes.
Evaluating Your Progress in ELC Courses
Student Evaluation
Feedback on a student's progress toward the Student Learning Outcomes is given by the instructor at the midterm and at the end of the term. Instructors complete midterm and final student progress forms and discuss them with each student twice per term. These forms are placed in the student's file for future placement (if the student continues) or recommendation letters as needed by the student.
Certificate Policy
Earning a certificate at the end of the term is an achievement for doing all the required work in all assigned classes. It is possible for students to receive a certificate without being promoted to the next level because they have not yet attained the proficiency for success at the next level.
The requirements for receiving a certificate include:
- Participating in class activities and completing all assignments as defined by the instructor in the course syllabus.
- Maintaining required attendance. If a student is placed on probation, warning, or drop status for attendance in any class, they will not receive a program certificate.
Promotion Policy
Moving up to the next level is not automatic. A student is placed in a level because they have the necessary proficiency for that level. Proficiency is how well a student is able to read and write or listen and speak in English. In the last week of the term, there is a required final exam that will count as 10% of a student's final grade. To move up to the next level, the student must do well on the Student Learning Outcomes listed on the course syllabi and receive a grade of 75% or more.
Teacher, Course, and Program Evaluations
Students will be asked to fill out forms evaluating the instructors of the program and the overall program administration. We encourage students to respond honestly and fully to the questions. The course evaluations are returned privately to the ELC Director and Associate Director of Programs for review and recommendations.
