James Reynolds

Chair, Gastroenterology at Drexel University College of Medicine

James Reynolds, PhD, MD, a native of Florida, graduated from Florida State University and received his medical degree from the University of Florida. There, he was president of his class and received several honors, including admission to Alpha Omega Alpha as a junior, the John B. Gorrie Award as the student with best promise for outstanding performance, and research awards. He completed his residency at Cornell University and a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He then joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, where he rose to associate chief of the program. While there he remained funded by the NIH and other national organizations for his research in the effect of neuropeptides on gastrointestinal motility. In 1990 he became chief of the Division Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh. He was co-director of the Centers for Digestive Health and an associate professor of medicine and cell biology. In 1996 he became professor of medicine with tenure and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at MCP Hahnemann University, now Drexel University College of Medicine. He held this position and that of program director from 1996 to 2008. He has held numerous leadership roles in the College of Medicine and at Hahnemann University Hospital. He was elected vice president of the College’s physicians practice plan (Drexel University Physicians®) from 1999 to 2007. From 2006 to 2008 he served as president of the medical staff at Hahnemann University Hospital and was a member of the board of directors of the hospital. He became interim chair of the Department of Medicine in 2003. In 2005 he was named the June F. Klinghoffer Distinguished Chairman of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Reynolds is a member of the editorial board of Digestive Diseases and Sciences and is a reviewer for a large number of journals. He has published over 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and has co-edited 5 books. He has received numerous honors including Phi Beta Kappa, AOA, “Physician of the Year” in 1995 by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, and recognition as the most outstanding gastroenterologist in Pittsburgh on two separate occasions by Pittsburgh Magazine. He was also named among Philadelphia’s “Top Docs” twice by Philadelphia Magazine. He has received teaching awards in both basic sciences and clinical sciences from the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel.
