Building Community through Student News on “Inside Ambition”

By Jane-janette Ansah ’22

Inside Ambition by Alexandra George, Drexel Communication Major

December 7, 2020

Last winter, third-year communication major Alexandra George noted a sense of disconnect and lack of school spirit at Drexel University. Out of this idea was born “Inside Ambition,” Drexel University Television’s casual news show that aims to foster community at Drexel and provide a connection between students and the University. The show reports on news affecting students and shares interviews with Drexel community members about what is happening on campus, even as the show films remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

With George as host and creator, the show has grown to include a multi-member student production team: fellow communication majors Luciano Duffy and Jane-janette Ansah as sports host/writer and communications director, respectively; film and television major Michael Singleton as writer and editor; biomedical engineering major Liv Jones as editor; entertainment and arts management major Cali Metzker as production assistant; and legal studies major Gabrielle Remo as political host and social media lead.

“I love working on the show and developing new content every week,” says George, who also uses the show as an opportunity to pursue her career goals in media, “but the feedback from our audience is what truly motivates me. It is clear that an outlet like this is something Drexel students needed: content produced uniquely to suit their interests, and a place for them to let their voices be heard.”

“Inside Ambition” airs on Drexel University Television (Comcast channels 54 or 62 and Verizon FIOS channel 37) and publishes segments on Drexel Television’s Youtube channel. It currently comprises five segments:

  • Inside Look goes on a deep dive into things happening at Drexel or news that directly affects Drexel and its students.
  • Drexel Update is a feature interview with someone at or around Drexel that gives information about what is happening in their area of expertise and how students can get involved or benefit from participation.
  • COVID Stories shares the stories of students who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in any way.
  • Drexel Sports Zone focuses on sports happening in and around Drexel and the Philadelphia area.
  • Foresight 2020 focuses on the 2020 election and is the show’s political analysis segment.

The show also actively encourages students to suggest topics and organizations they would like to see covered — from clubs wishing to promote themselves to academic departments sharing updates about their programs.

“‘Inside Ambition’ hopes to be a space for students to connect with one another and know about what’s happening on campus,” says George. “Whatever you want to learn about, whatever you want to talk about, come to us and we will find out more information. You have a problem or an idea? Tell us, and we’ll talk about it. This is YOUR outlet, Drexel Dragons.”
