Physics Colloquium: Topologyof Quantum Matter in and out of Equilibrium

Thursday, June 8, 2023

3:30 PM-5:00 PM

Join us Thursday, June 8th for our Weekly Physics Colloquium! Guest Speaker, Dr. Frank Schindler, will be joining us from the Center for Theoretical Science at Princeton University.

Abstract:
This talk aims to serve as a pedagogical invitation into the fascinating field of quantum materials in and out of equilibrium. Such materials, capable of realizing exotic states of matter, hold promise for manifold applications in areas like microelectronics and quantum computing. The most basic quantum materials are electronic band insulators. My talk will start with an explanation of how they can be categorized based on symmetry and topology. Following this, I will broaden the framework of band topology to include non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which describe systems that are not in equilibrium. To conclude my talk, I will delve into a curious connection between Hermitian bulk and non-Hermitian boundary topological invariants. This last part of the talk is based on our recent work arXiv:2304.03742.
