Bio:

Shyamalendu M. Bose, PhD, was hired by Drexel University as an assistant professor of physics in September 1970. He rose through the ranks to become a full professor in 1983, and has recently been awarded professor emeritus status. He has also served as the Associate Dean, Senior Associate Dean and the Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1992 to 2000. He spent his three sabbatical leaves at the University of Liege, Belgium, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, India and University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India and University of Hyderabad, India, and a visiting scientist at Schlumberger-Doll Research Center, Connecticut at various times.

Professor Bose is a condensed matter theorist working on such topics of contemporary interest as graphenes, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, metallic nanoshells, quantum dots and high-temperature superconductivity. He has also contributed substantially in the areas of surface and interface physics, disordered systems and many-body physics. He has published more than 100 papers in professional journals and conference proceedings and nearly 60 conference abstracts. He has co-organized six international conferences and has co-edited five conference proceedings. He has presented invited talks at numerous national and international conferences in the US, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australia. He has guided research of a significant number of undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students. For his contribution to research and scholarship Bose was honored by Drexel University as the recipient of its 1990 Research Achievement Award.

Shyamalendu M. Bose, PhD, has the reputation of being excellent classroom teacher. Over the years he has taught a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate classes which ranged in size from very small to very large. Drexel University honored him in 1982 with the prestigious Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for excellence in teaching.

Bose’s service contribution to Drexel and the community has also been significant. He has served either as the chairman or a member of many important university, college and departmental committees. He was inducted to the Legion of Honor of Philadelphia’s Chapel of Four Chaplains for his community service.
