Bio:
Julie Mostov, PhD, is a Professor Emerita and formerly served as the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at Drexel University. She received her BA from Mount Holyoke College, her MA from the University of Belgrade (Yugoslavia) and her PhD from New York University. Under Professor Mostov’s leadership, the Office of International Programs brought a global dimension to university life, promoting a wide range of strategic initiatives from study abroad and exchanges to major research collaborations and centers, international cooperative agreements, conferences, co-curricular programming and cultural events.
Her academic research explores the politics of national identity, sovereignty, citizenship and gender with a special focus on Southeastern Europe. Her recent work looks at violence, borders, and space and promotes the notion of soft-borders, transnational citizenship, and relational sovereignty. Publications related to these themes include: Soft Borders: Rethinking Sovereignty and Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008); her book with Rada Ivekovic, From Gender to Nation, (University of Bologna/Longo Editore, 2002 and Zubaan Press, New Delhi: India, 2004); "Soft Borders and Transnational Citizens;” “‘Our Women’/ ‘Their Women’: Symbolic Boundaries, Territorial Markers, and Violence in the Balkans;” “The Use and Abuse of History in Eastern Europe;” “Endangered Citizens;” and “La formation de l’ethnocratie.”
In addition to this academic research, Mostov has been a consultant for the United States government and the European Union and has been actively involved in development projects in Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and Moldova, securing over $2,000,000 in U.S. State Department funding.
