Bio:

James Mungin, PhD, (pronouns they, them) is a biomedical scientist and educator dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research and inclusive excellence in STEM. They earned their PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Meharry Medical College, where their research investigated the molecular mechanisms of Zika virus vaginal transmission, contributing to understanding of host–virus interactions and antiviral immune signaling. They completed their undergraduate training magna cum laude at Tuskegee University.

Dr. Mungin’s interdisciplinary research encompass virus-host interactions, vaccinology, biomedical sciences, and machine learning. Their work seeks to advance understanding of molecular biology and human health through a lens focused on health disparities. An experienced instructor and mentor, Dr. Mungin has taught cell and molecular biology, immunology, and related biology courses while training students in laboratory skills and scientific communication. As a non-binary scientist, they intentionally integrate discussions of health disparities and representation in biomedical research into their teaching, fostering inclusive learning environments that support diverse students in science.
