Corporate entrepreneurship, which can also be referred to as intrapreneurship, is the approach of encouraging employees to think and behave like entrepreneurs within the structure of a pre existing organization. These types of employees can become major assets and are encouraged to speak up and develop new ideas, identify new opportunities, and find unique ways to bring innovation to already existing businesses. At the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship, students are always encouraged to think outside the box and bring creative solutions to develop innovative ideas in and out of the classroom. With courses like Organizational Development and Change for Corporate Entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurship & New Technologies, Innovation in Established Companies, and so much more, students have the opportunity to learn from both corporate entrepreneurs and all types of entrepreneurs who share their successes, failures, and important lessons with the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Drexel’s entrepreneurship co-op provides students with a unique opportunity giving them a chance to spend six months to develop their business idea. If students are accepted to the program, they are paired with an established entrepreneur or executive to work as their mentor; they receive $15,000 in funding and a dedicated workspace in the Baiada Institute for Entrepreneurship. Last term, two companies, banni, and Sasas Mix had the opportunity to work as part of the entrepreneurship co-op. As their time during the six months came to an end, they shared how they’ve grown, what they learned, and their key takeaways during their time spent in the co-op!

Drexel’s Ciright Dragon Startup Competition was held this February and brought together many innovators from the Drexel community. With $20k in prize money that was split amongst five of the competitors and a ton of great ideas, it’s safe to say that the competition was a hit!

The Raynier Institute & Foundation, a Seattle-based philanthropic organization with Philadelphia roots, has partnered with Drexel University and the University City Science Center to improve access to capital for minority entrepreneurs in the area. The institutions will collaboratively manage a seed fund created by a $500,000 grant from the Foundation, which was founded by an heir of Philadelphia transportation and real estate magnate Peter Widener, and supports programs of high merit for the betterment of humanity.
