Integrated Cognitive Optical Neurophysiological Sensing (ICONS) Laboratory

ICONS Lab

The Integrated Cognitive Optical Neurophysiological Sensing (ICONS) Laboratory designs and applies advanced optical biosensors to study the brain and body in both laboratory and real-world environments. Our work centers on noninvasive and wearable neuroimaging techniques—including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS)—to:

  • Monitor and study brain activity allowing for the design of brain-in-the-loop adaptive systems that support effective human interaction with autonomous systems and personalized training in complex environments ranging from aviation to health care.
  • Investigate cerebral hemodynamics for anesthesia care, brain injury detection and management of treatment, including conditions such as hemorrhagic and hypoxic shock.
