Dr. Lin Han and Colleague Receive an NIH Grant To Study the Molecular Engineering of Cartilage PCM Mechanotransduction

July 11, 2022

Lin HanDr. Lin Han, associate professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems (Co-PI), and Dr. Michele Marcolongo, dean of engineering at Villanova University, received a 5-year $1.56M NIH National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases grant for the project titled, “Molecular Engineering of Cartilage PCM Mechanotransduction in Osteoarthritis Using Biomimetic Proteoglycans.” The project aims to develop biomimetic proteoglycans that can augment the immediate micro-niche of cartilage cells, and to modulate the mechanobiology of residing chondrocytes. As a result, Dr. Han and his team seek to design new, minimally invasive strategies that can attenuate the progression of osteoarthritis through mitigating the disruption of cell mechanotransduction upon injury or inflammation.
