Marielle Presente! Racism, Health, and the Global Struggle for Black Lives

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

4:30 PM-6:30 PM

On the evening of March 14, 38-year-old Marielle Franco, a black feminist, human rights activist, and local politician in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was assassinated after leaving the event "Young Black Women Moving Power Structures" in downtown Rio. Marielle was an outspoken critic of police brutality and the militarization of Black and poor communities in the city and advocated for policies that promoted racial and gender equality and basic human rights and dignity. The mass protests in Brazil sparked by her tragic death are a testament to her compassion, fearless activism, and commitment to standing with communities to advocate for radical social change.

Join us for an intimate conversation with Sharrelle Barber, ScD, MPH, assistant research professor at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health, as she discusses her recent trip to Brazil, her life-changing experience meeting Marielle Franco, and the connections between intersectional, anti-racist struggles in Brazil, the United States, and around the World. Dr. Barber will be joined by Gabriel Rocha, PhD a Rio native and assistant professor in the Drexel Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, and Jeana Morrison, PhD from the Drexel University School of Education. This event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. A livestream will be available for those unable to attend in person.

Light refreshments will be served.
