Fulbright Study/Research Grant to Iceland, 2023-24

PhD candidate materials science & engineering, BS '19

Emily Herbert is a PhD candidate in materials science & engineering working with Dr. Caroline Schauer. Her research focus is making films and fibers from natural materials. In Dr. Schauer's lab she has electrospun nanofibers and made thin films from natural polymers. The first phase of her project is to include polyphenols, a waste byproduct of many food industries, into natural polymer matrices for applications in active packaging. The second phase is to improve the tensile properties of PHBHx films. The final phase of her research will occur in Iceland, and will focus on synthesizing Polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers with a special interest in addressing issues around scaling up.
