The Humanity in Action (HIA) Fellowship is a year-long program for international groups of students and young professionals who are passionate about active citizenship, diversity and human rights. The Fellowship begins with a funded 3-week, immersive academic program in several cities across Europe and the United States, exploring issues of social justice, human rights, politics of memory and remembrance culture, and civic engagement. Each program is tailored to its location.
Following the 3-week study program, Fellows work on a part-time, independent Action Project planned during the study portion that applies their new knowledge and perspectives to the community they impact.
The program is open to undergraduate sophomores through seniors, current graduate students, and recent alumni from U.S. universities, with no citizenship requirement. HIA programs are fully-funded, with the exception of a small number of meals and the cost of airfare. However, full and partial stipends are available for those with documented need.
Each program is highly interdisciplinary and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums and memorials. The programs seek to bridge the gap between theory and practice and highlight different models of action to remedy injustice.
