Journal Article Highlights Impact of Trauma-Informed Financial Empowerment Programs

November 13, 2024

The Journal of Child and Family Studies published new research from Emily Weida, Director of Research and Evaluation at the Center. The study examined how trauma-informed financial empowerment programs can significantly enhance financial well-being for families living in poverty.

Weida's research focuses on the Building Wealth and Health Network (The Network), a program that integrates financial education with trauma-informed care. Designed for families facing adversity, the Network offers a space for participants to heal from trauma while developing essential financial skills. According to the study, participants who engaged more fully in the program showed marked improvements in financial behaviors, knowledge, and confidence, with these gains continuing six months after starting the program.

"Financial well-being and health are deeply connected, particularly for those experiencing poverty and trauma," the article ntes. "This research demonstrates that combining financial literacy with emotional support can lead to long-term financial stability for struggling families."

This research underscores the importance of addressing both trauma and financial literacy in efforts to break the cycle of poverty. Weida’s study represents a significant contribution to the growing field of trauma-informed financial empowerment.
