Fashion Plates

Fashion plates are hand-colored engravings that appeared in women’s magazines and fashion journals from the late 18th century through the early 20th century that provided information to dressmakers and home sewers on the latest fashion trends. Many of the fashion plates in the Fox Collection are from Godey’s Lady’s Book (1830-1898), the most influential American women’s magazine of the mid-19th century.
