Established in 1891, the Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection (FHCC) reflects A. J. Drexel’s belief that the study of art and design is essential to a well-rounded education. Today, the Fox Historic Costume Collection has grown into a museum-quality repository of more than 15,000 garments, textiles, and accessories.

Spanning from 15th- and 16th-century Renaissance velvets to contemporary high fashion, the Collection represents centuries of design, craftsmanship, and cultural expression. It includes works by some of the most influential designers in fashion history, including Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, Christian Dior, Charles James, Elsa Schiaparelli, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and Yves Saint Laurent.

The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University was established through a gift of over 700 ensembles, along with thousands of photographs, sketches, textile swatches, and other materials from the designer’s personal collection.

Research and cataloging of the Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection is ongoing, and our records may be incomplete or evolving. In keeping with our educational mission, we strive to make as much of the collection accessible online as possible. Doing so sometimes requires flexibility in traditional metadata and cataloging standards. We welcome feedback that may help enhance the accuracy of our records and deepen understanding of the collection.
