Co-Op and Employment

Students with disabilities are sometimes apprehensive about co-op. They may experience concern about the job search or interview process and if/how they will disclose their disabilities, or about how to advocate for themselves once on the job.

Disability Resources is able to assist students in accessing reasonable accommodations at off-campus job sites and on-campus placements. Students in on-campus co-op placements are treated as employees of the University, not students.

You should consider disclosing a disability to your employer if you will need accommodations on the interview, or in order to perform the essential functions of your job (typically, it is recommended that an individual be offered a position before disclosing the need for accommodations). Otherwise, it is up to you to decide if and when you tell anyone at your workplace about your disability.
