Education:

  • MA, English and Creative Writing, Temple University 1996
  • BA, Government, Harvard University, 1984

Bio:

I am writing a historical novel based on the civil rights movement in the Mississippi Delta in the early 1960s. I write a column on politics and history for Press 1, an online magazine. In my teaching, I combine an interest in fiction along with an interest in science, politics, history, psychology and culture. More recently, my teaching interests have expanded to include humor (analyzing it and writing it) as well as graphic novels. Prominent themes in my freshman English classes include the use of plain language, the nature of happiness, the workings of the mind and the brain and the study of creativity.
