HBCU Forum
This event, while held in tandem with our Annual Assessment Conference, is specifically designed for Presidents and Provosts of Historically Black Colleges and Universities [HBCU’s] in the United States. Since HBCU colleges and universities have historically served as access portals for a diverse set of first-generation students, participants will be able to capitalize on the accumulated wealth of experience and commitment in a joint dialogue focused on the state of the HBCU institution. The roundtable participants will explore ways to focus on the most pressing issues of the day such as marketing and the development of alternative streams of revenue from tuition and fees, especially for the private HBCUs. We will also discuss ways in which partnerships [and the value of those partnerships to both the HBCU and the partnering institution] can be formed in which HBCU Presidents and Provosts can establish relationships with institutions for graduate study, faculty exchange, etc. such as the Drexel-Stillman collaborative. Additionally, we can engage and focus on an interest of HBCUs to piggyback on International Study Abroad programs because the student demand is not as great on most HBCU campuses. The HBCU leadership, however, sees the need to advance these opportunities to market to students. Finally, we want to have a conversation about the value that HBCU’s bring to other institutions such as majority research institutions, and how HBCUs can position themselves going forward to meet the demands of the next generation of students. The roundtable will be held on Wednesday September 12, 2018 from 9:00 to noon, and will be facilitated by Dr. Cynthia Warrick, President of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is our hope that participants will be able to share their thoughts and insights with each other, and together engage in a transformative dialogue.
