Violence Profile for the Eastern North Philadelphia Community

Using Data Integration to Create a Profile of Violence Needs and Assets to Inform Solutions in the Latino Community of Eastern North Philadelphia

Elevated train tracks and cars in Kensington Philadelphia

Summary

Children and families in the Latino community of Eastern North Philadelphia are disproportionately exposed to violence, the consequences of which include emotional trauma and associated adverse effects throughout adolescence and into adulthood. This project systematically integrated data that describes community-level violence related disparities, risk factors, consequences, and assets. Researchers used existing data from multiple sources and sectors in new ways to better understand and describe the extent of the problem. The project also created an inventory  of community assets that can be built upon to  inform solutions. The collaboration and creation of a web-based violence profile aimed to increase awareness of the disparities in violence and crime experienced by this community.

Research Methods

Data integration methods were used to combine service delivery data from key organizations, publicly available data and other secondary data sources to create a paper and web-based violence profile of the 24th, 25th, and 26th police districts in Eastern North Philadelphia. Data visualization tools were utilized to display the prevalence of community violence incidents in this community and the disparities in neighborhood-level risk factors for violence and crime. The web-based profile also presents community assets and resources available that are associated with violence prevention, recovery, and general community resilience.
