Research Consultations
Interested in getting involved with undergraduate research but unsure where to start? Contact Undergraduate Research & Enrichment Programs to set up a consultation with a staff member.
Research consultations can help you:
- Reflect on your research interests and how you can put those interests into practice
- Identify potential faculty research mentors
- Prepare materials to share with potential faculty research mentors
- Discover best practices for approaching faculty research mentors
- Understand how to make the most of your research experience
- Identify financial resources to support your research activities
Ways to prepare for a research consultation include:
- Thinking through your research interests, including why you want to do research and what you find fascinating about your topic.
- Considering your academic strengths and skills. What areas are you strongest in? What academic topics do you enjoy most? In what areas do you wish to grow and improve?
- Identifying challenges you think you might encounter in the process of finding a research opportunity and in conducting research. What do you think you need to do to prepare yourself to approach faculty? Where do you think you will need to improve prior to beginning research?
- Thinking about how research fits into your overall academic and professional goals. How will participating in research help you attain those goals? What do you hope to gain from participating in research, and how will those benefits ripple into other areas of your education?
- Being honest about how much time you have to devote to research. Think carefully about the time you can commit to a research project without sacrificing time needed for your coursework or your other extra-curricular commitments. This will help us determine what type of research opportunity will be most appropriate for you.
Through research consultations, we want to help you think through where you are in your development as a researcher, what your academic goals are and how research can help you achieve those goals, and what topics most intrigue and inspire you.
