Congratulations to Nicholas Cole, DoD SMART semi-finalist!

February 7, 2020

Congratulations to Nicholas Cole (BS Electrical Engineering '24, Honors), who has advanced as a semi-finalist for the SMART Scholarship for Service Program!

I applied for the DoD SMART scholarship in the fall term. Since I am only a freshman, I did not expect to be named a semi-finalist. DoD SMART is a program that offers an 8-12 week paid internship at a DoD lab in the United States. The program offers full tuition+fees+room/board for college for the year, a $25,000 stipend for that year, and 1 year of post-grad employment. When I saw those benefits, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to apply. I envision myself working in the defense sector designing military weaponry after college.  In my free time I take part in engineering clubs such as IEEE and AIAA. Joining those clubs have inspired me to pursue this scholarship. Hopefully I'll be named a finalist in March, and if not it I will not let it stop my career pursuit.

The DoD Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
