Congratulations to Drexel's 2015 Goldwater Honorees

April 8, 2015

Congratulations to Drexel's 2015 Goldwater Scholarship recipients — Anthony Abel and Anjli Patel — and Honorable Mention Michael Koerner.

Anthony Abel (Chemical Engineering, BS, ’17, Honors) (Chemical Engineering, BS, ’17, Honors) is developing novel photoelectrochemical systems for solar water splitting, and focuses specifically on solution processing and low-cost materials in the hopes of making these devices economically attractive for universal implementation (Advisor: Prof. Jason Baxter). Anthony was also a STAR Scholar in Dr. Baxter's lab. He is currently co-oping at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where he is studying high-efficiency water splitting systems for grid-scale energy storage. In his spare time, Anthony enjoys playing squash, watching football, and reading.

Anjli Patel (Chemical Engineering, BS, ’16, Honors) is a junior chemical engineering student minoring in materials science and engineering. Anjli began her undergraduate research experience in Drexel’s STAR program studying nanostructured copper oxide solar cells with Dr. Baxter in the CBE department. This experience opened her eyes to research as a career possibility, and she continued working in Dr. Baxter's lab investigating photoelectrochemical water splitting for hydrogen generation. After she graduates from Drexel, she plans to pursue a PhD in semiconducting materials for solar energy applications, and ultimately hopes to be a materials researcher in the photovoltaics industry.

HONORABLE MENTION

Michael Koerner (Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, BS, ’17, Honors) is a third year Biomedical Engineering student with a concentration in Biomedical Devices and Imaging. He is currently working on the Exo-Skin soft robotic exoskeleton interdisciplinary research project in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Cohen of the Bioimage Lab, Professor Genevieve Dion of the Shima Seiki Haute Tech Lab, and Dr. Jane Fedorczyk of the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences. He plans to pursue his PhD in Biomedical Engineering after graduating from Drexel. Michael is also involved in the student branch of Drexel’s IEEE chapter.

The Goldwater Scholarship was established by Congress in 1986, with the goal of recognizing the nation's top undergraduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
