Congratulations to Drexel's nominees for the 2013 Lindau Award competition - Kevin Freedman (Chemical Eng), Kristy Jost (Materials Sci), and Siobhan Toal (Chemistry).

The Lindau Award supports exceptional doctoral student researchers to attend the annual Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates in scenic Lindau, Germany. This year's Lindau meeting will focus on Chemistry and Chemistry-related fields.

Kevin Freedman is a 3rd year doctoral student in Chemical and Biological Engineering, with research focusing on nanopores for biophysics applications. He is in the research group of Prof MinJun Kim, and is funded by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Kevin was a Drexel undergraduate in Biomedical Engineering.

Kristy Jost is a 2nd year PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering, where she is using nanotechnology to develop integrated energy storage for 'smart' and electronic textiles. Kristy is funded by the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG), and works with Prof. Yury Gogotsi in the AJ Drexel Nanotechnology Institute. Kristy was an undergraduate in Drexel's Fashion Design program.

Siobhan Toal is a 4th year PhD student in Chemistry, where she works with Prof. Reinhard Schweitzer-Stenner in the Bio-Spectroscopy group. Siobhan's research is both a practical and theoretical investigation of protein/peptide structure and dynamics, within the broad area of biophysical chemistry. She was an undergraduate Chemistry student at Carnegie-Mellon University.

At the Lindau meeting, Laureates lecture on the topic of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal, small-group discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings. Drexel has sent four students to Lindau over the past four years, and each time, students have come back enthusiastic and energized by the unique experience. We wish this year's nominees the best in the national competition.
