Fulbright-Hays DDRA Fellowship


The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, provides grants for graduate students to conduct 6-12 months of full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies.



The DDRA program supports projects that deepen knowledge about areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula, and that help host nations improve their research capability.



Projects must focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the U.S. & U.S. territories). Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported.

Awards include travel expenses, allowance based on host country cost of living, research expenses, and health insurance.



To be eligible, a student must:

  • Be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States.
  • Be a graduate student in good standing
  • Have advanced to doctoral candidacy by the grant start date
  • Plan a teaching career in the United States upon graduation
  • Possess adequate skills in the foreign language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation research project.
