Data Privacy Week 2024

Data Privacy Week: Jan. 21-27, 2024

Data Privacy Day is celebrated annually on January 28 to commemorate the Jan. 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty on privacy and data protection. As of 2022, the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) expanded this event to span a full week, Data Privacy Week.

Data Privacy Week helps raise awareness about online privacy and how to manage and protect your valuable online data. It also encourages businesses to respect data and learn about the responsibility they hold for keeping individuals' personal information safe from unauthorized access and ensuring fair, relevant and legitimate data collection and processing.

Drexel's Privacy Program Services encourages the following actions to celebrate Data Privacy Week:

Protect Your Data

Visit the National Cybersecurity Alliance’s website — staysafeonline.org — to learn how to check and update the privacy settings on accounts you use the most

Review Your Apps

Delete unused apps on your devices and keep others secure by performing updates. Be sure to check and modify the privacy settings of every new app/account you make; check up on your existing accounts, too, particularly social media, retail store apps and smart assistants

Lock Down Your Passwords

Don't use the same password for everything — make unique complex passwords and use a password manager to help.

Brush Up on Best Practices

Drexel IT's Information Security team has a wealth of resources on their website, including best practices and FAQs for both students and employees.

Attend a Webinar

The National Cybersecurity Alliance and its partners are hosting virtual events throughout the week covering a range of topics including:

Student Privacy

In Jan. 2024, the Student Privacy Policy Office of the U.S. Department of Education will be hosting a three-day National Winter Webinar Series.
