Q&A: New Chair Ira Taffer ’79, PhD ’83 on Leadership, Connection and the Drexel 100
Drawn by Drexel’s academic reputation and renowned co-op program, Ira Taffer earned both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees in chemistry before launching a successful entrepreneurial career in life sciences.
Over the years, his ties to the University deepened through leadership roles as interim head of the Departments of Chemistry, and English and Philosophy, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, chair of the Drexel Alumni Board of Governors, and a champion of student-focused initiatives.
“Watching students grow and mature during their years at Drexel and seeing their accomplishments after graduation really deepened my Drexel pride,” he says. His connections span decades and many corners of the University, but, according to Taffer, “it all started with the meaningful friendships I made with students, faculty and staff during my undergraduate days.”

What inspired you to take on the role of chair of the Drexel 100?
Having watched the impact that the Drexel 100 and its previous chairs have had on the University inspired me to continue the mission.
What do you think makes the Drexel 100 unique?
While the name can be confusing to outsiders, this group is known as the “Hall of Fame” of alumni, and it stands as a testament to the education and life experiences we gathered as students. It is important to recognize Dragons who are making a meaningful impact on academics, industry and their communities. And I believe this group can serve as an inspiration and point of pride for both students and alumni.
What role can the Drexel 100 play in supporting students, the alumni community and the University?
It’s important for members of the Drexel 100 to continue to provide support for the University and its mission. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, whether it be creating co-op opportunities, mentorship of students and other alumni, serving on committees or boards and when able, financially supporting scholarships and other University funds.
What’s one piece of career or life advice you’d give to current Drexel students?
We often, especially as undergraduates, think we have a plan for our career path. Keep your eyes open and take chances when opportunities present themselves. I never envisioned the path my career has taken!
Looking ahead, what would success look like at the end of your term as chair?
As I mentioned earlier, one of my primary goals is to have the Drexel 100 widely recognized as Drexel University’s Alumni Hall of Fame, a distinction that is understood far beyond campus. Equally important is strengthening the role of this group as a strategic asset to Drexel. I envision more opportunities for members to connect through regular events, meaningful communications and creating an engaged network that actively collaborates and champions initiatives that advance Drexel’s mission. Success would mean a more visible, connected and impactful Drexel 100 that continues to inspire and support the University in tangible ways.
