Chadia Abras, Ph.D: Director of Institutional Assessment, Johns Hopkins University

Chadia Abras, Ph.D. joined the Provost’s Office at Johns Hopkins University as the inaugural Director of Institutional Assessment. In this role, Dr. Abras collaborates with institutional stakeholders to support student learning by assisting academic programs in developing and refining assessment plans, meeting the goals of defined learning outcomes, and encouraging a culture of learner-centered education. She plays a key role in ensuring ongoing compliance with MSCHE standards by promoting institutional effectiveness and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Dr. Abras is an associate professor at the School of Education, where she served as the associate dean of assessment, and technology.

Janet Schreck, Ph.D: Associate Vice Provost for Education, Johns Hopkins University

Janet Simon Schreck, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, FNAP joined Johns Hopkins University in December 2015 as the Assistant Vice Provost for Education. Dr. Schreck is responsible for collaborating with appropriate stakeholders from a broad cross-section of the campus community to improve undergraduate and graduate education and provide oversight for academic compliance. Dr. Schreck serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer to MSCHE, chairs the University Committee on Learning Assessment, and serves as senior staff to the Second Commission on Undergraduate Education (CUE2). Dr. Schreck has a faculty appointment at the School of Education and is a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist.


Attendees will acquire knowledge and skills in creating structures and processes designed to rally stakeholders around the concept of assessment as a tool for improvement and not just for accreditation. The audience will acquire a tool kit of how to identify and engage appropriate stakeholders and what is needed to maintain their engagement. The audience will learn how to gain buy-in from stakeholders, create effective partnerships, and promote ownership of assessment practices. Attendees will also learn how to utilize technology as a tool to promote culture change.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Involve stakeholders across multiple schools to create an effective culture of assessment.
  2. Engage stakeholders from various levels of the university ecosystem, including university administration, deans, faculty, student affairs staff, students and others, to gain their buy-in into assessment and eventually create a culture of ownership of assessment practices.
  3. Implement an assessment management system across multiple divisions and schools in a decentralized environment.
