The ArtistYear program provides a unique opportunity for Westphal students graduating this year and alumni up to the age of 28 to make a difference by creating unique arts programs and classes in nearby, underserved Philadelphia public schools. ArtistYear Fellows spend a year working full-time and will receive a national service allowance, living stipend, medical insurance, along with weekly coaching and fellows meetings. ArtistYear is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 program and an information session will be held on Tuesday, November 28 in the Dean’s Conference Room (URBN Center, Floor 1A) at 6pm – pizza included!

Just recently, ArtistYear became the first national organization dedicated to service through the arts to receive recognition from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees Americorps and national volunteering initiatives. Inclusion in Americorps means ArtistYear participants will be eligible for student loan forebearance. This is the third year Westphal students are partnering with this important program and past participants have come from our programs in Dance, Entertainment & Arts Management, Product Design, and others. This unique opportunity is open to designers, performers, visual artists and just about any discipline we teach if you’re interested in arts-based learning, strengthening the social and economic fabric of our City, and a life as a citizen-artist. Artist-Citizen Service Year launched in 2014 at the Curtis Institute of Music and is growing rapidly now offering programs in NYC, Colorado, and Philadelphia.. Graduates and schools collaborated with community organizations such as Play On, Philly!, Project Home, South Philadelphia High School, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Cooper’s Poynt School, and the Center for Autism Research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
