Courtney Geis Ercole, MSW, MHS, PA-CWhat has inspired you to train the next generation of leaders?
Teaching happened very organically for me. I worked in primary care for nine years. During that time, I was a preceptor and guest lecturer both at Drexel and Marshall B Ketchum University in California. I love the energy of teaching and learning every day. Education continues to challenge me to continue to master and embrace medicine.

How has education and practice shifted over the last five years?
PA practice continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of the community it serves. The scope of practice has widened, and thankfully, intradisciplinary teams are valued more. There is acknowledgment of the necessity of teaching/practicing patient communication skills. Additionally, I am a strong advocate for formative learning environments. I love that PA education recognizes the importance of this and has embraced it.

How do you prioritize health equity in the curriculum and practice?
Servant leadership.

I believe that it is important to be a good role model to students. It is essential to be involved in the community at large and have a presence, not only in our Dragon community, but in our neighborhoods.

Continue to encourage patients and students to be involved and committed to their own journeys. Empower others to navigate through difficulties, celebrate small successes, advocate for underrepresented communities and be the change they wish to see in the world.

Do you have a favorite restaurant, museum or location in Philadelphia where you enjoy spending time?
I love toing to Reading Terminal. The best Chinese restaurant in the city is there! I also enjoy the farmer's market in my neighborhood. I get so inspired by fresh, local products!

What do you wish students knew before arriving for their first year of study?
Never stop believing in yourself. You are smart, you are resilient and you will be okay. Trust the evolution of yourself from student to provider.
