Health Services Administration Students Visit Philadelphia City Council Caucus Room

December 6, 2022

Seven HSAD students sit around large table in Philadelphia City Council Caucus roomEarlier this year, students enrolled in HSAD 335: Health Care Policy had the unique opportunity to visit city officials at Philadelphia’s City Hall and gain real time experience. During their visit, students observed full Council sessions on budget hearing and public testimony on proposed bills. The day’s activities featured a variety of guest speakers including citizen activists, legislative aids, Pennsylvania state senator deputy legislative director, public policy media commentator columnist and radio talk show host/TV panelist, and Max Weiss, the then Chief of Staff for Council member Jamie R. Gauthier, District 3. With a view from the Philadelphia City Council’s Caucus Room, CNHP students were immersed in the real-world experience of health care policy in action.

Opportunities like this caucus visit exemplify the utility of Drexel’s Bachelor of Science in Health Service Administration program. Our program provides students with a foundation in general management and economic principles related to health care and services, as well as an understanding of the administrative structure, operations and policies of the health care, services, and related industries. Co-operative education experience helps students understand how to apply what they are learning while developing confidence and professionalism. Health Services Administration students have completed co-op experiences at a variety of sites, including the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Student Health Clinic.

For those interested in health care and health policies, Drexel’s Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration (HSAD) provides a robust program that prepares students for a variety of careers in health services management or administrative careers. This degree program is designed for those interested in the non-clinical aspects of health care including how government and policy shape our health care system.
