Undergraduate Students & Faculty on the Move

DREXEL SNA wins the 2017 SCORE! NCLEX® Championship Bowl 

Teams from various nursing programs from across the Commonwealth competed Wednesday, November 15, 2017, for the honor of being named champion of the 2017 SCORE! NCLEX® Championship Bowl! The team beat a strong Saint Francis University team as well as the previous champions Roxborough Memorial Hospital School of Nursing to earn a monetary award, along with the beautiful championship silver bowl. 

The team was comprised of the following members and was coached by Mary Yost, PhD.

Dragons go to Ireland

A group of senior nursing students had the honor of representing Drexel in Ireland. The students were able to make community observations about the healthcare system in Ireland and compare it to community observations of the immediate Drexel area. They attended a seminar at Trinity College where they learned about the educational differences between nursing programs in the United States versus those in Ireland. And as a culminating experience, the students received a guided tour of Temple Street Children’s Hospital by the chief nursing officer Gráinne Bauer. The students were truly amazed by the differences that they saw between the two countries. The student group included Aubrey Cederberg-Murray, Gabriel Chamberlin, Emily Mercandetti, Thalia Patino, Sarah Pitcherella, Shira Pomerantz, Mariana Riehl and Renita Thomas who were accompanied by faculty members Deanna Schaffer, PhD and Maura Nitka, MSN.

Dana Kemery, EdD has been elected to the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Educational Advisory Council.  

This appointment ties very nicely with our initiatives in the graduate program as well. The new post-master’s Emergency Nurse Practitioner Program beings in the winter quarter of 2018.

Marylou McHugh, EdD, Jill Derstine, EdD, Jane Green-Ryan, PhD, and Carol Okupniak, DrNP just returned from their ongoing work with Eternal University, Akal School of Nursing in India. 

Maryann Godshall, PhD, and Kim Garcia, DNP presented at the International Nursing Conference in Barcelona Spain on November 2, 2017. Garcia moderated the morning session at the conference and presented “Relationship-Based Care.” Godshall presented “New Modalities in Nursing Education: Inter-collaborative Education.” Their presentations were very well received, in fact they were approached after the conference by some nurses to come to Malta to present.

Assistant clinical professor Maureen Gonzales, MSN, CRNP presented a poster titled “Achieving an Interactive Learning Partnership: Bring Your Classroom to Life” at the National League for Nursing Summit in San Diego September 14 to 17, 2017.

Beth Chiatti, PhD gave two podium presentations (Sigma Theta Tau International Biennial Convention; Transcultural Nursing Society Annual Conference) and one poster presentation (Maimonides Medical Center Nursing Research Conference).

Graduate Nursing Presentations

The following four presentations were given at the 41st International Society on Addictions Nursing in Orlando, Florida from October 18 through 21.

William Lorman, PhD presented a two-hour workshop titled “Recognizing Impairment in the Work Place.”

Al Rundio, PhD presented an eight-hour workshop titled “Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) and CARN-Advanced Practice Review Course” to prepare nurses for the certification examinations.

CNHP’s Dana Murphy-Parker, MS, CRNP and Jill Terrien, PhD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School presented “Uniting & Leading through NP Education: Educating nurse practitioner students across populations regarding their role in caring for clients with opioid use disorders and chronic pain.”

Brenda Douglass, DNP and Susan Solecki, DrPH presented “What’s the Vibe on Vaping? A Novel Gateway to Addiction & Abuse.”

Collegiate Commission on Nursing Accreditation (CCNE)

This is to advise you that the CCNE, our major accrediting body in nursing, will be conducting an accreditation site visit on February 26, 27 and 28, 2018. All of the nursing programs will be reviewed during this site visit. 

We have been working on our self-study document that is required to be submitted by early January. We will be updating you in the next couple of months at faculty meetings and other venues on how the site visit will be conducted.

As part of its accreditation process, The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) plans to visit the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions on February 26 to February 28, 2018.  

The Commission seeks to review all of the nursing programs including: the undergraduate nursing programs, the graduate nursing programs inclusive of the Advanced Role programs and the Nurse Practitioner programs, the Post-Master¹s Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Certificate (PM-APRN-NP) program, the Nurse Anesthesia Program, the Post-Master's Nurse Anesthesia Certificate (PM-APRN-NA) program, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

In accordance with CCNE procedure, constituents (students, alumni and faculty) of these programs are invited to submit comments related to the quality of the programs under review to CCNE. Your comments are considered third party and any specific third party, signed comments concerning the accreditation process need to be received by February 5, 2018.  Please direct your comments to:
