Running Lecture Series: Keys to Running A Successful Fall Marathon
October 26, 2015
The Running Performance & Research Center at Drexel Parkway Health & Wellness (Philadelphia magazine’s Best of Philly®2015 - Best Place to Fix Your Running Form) conducted its third lecture in its running lecture series, entitled “Keys to Running a Successful Fall Marathon” on September 30.
Speakers included Robert Maschi, PT, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at Drexel University, Stella Lucia Volpe, PhD, professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University, Karl Savage, co-owner of Fairmount Running Company and Jenkintown Running Company, and Rahul Kapur, MD, chief medical physician at Penn Medicine.
The speakers discussed optimal nutrition for athletes, causes of fatigue during exercise, common runners’ injuries, foot type, items needed for marathon day and more topics related to marathon training and readiness. Audience members were given the opportunity to ask questions about their running pain and get expert advice on improving their run.
Here are some quick tips from “Keys to Running a Successful Fall Marathon”:
1. You want to consume enough nutrients and energy, because not eating enough can hurt your performance.
2. Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink.
3. Runners have high incidence of injuries due to overuse, so take rest days.
4. Stay away from cotton socks on race day, because when they get wet there is an easier chance for blistering. Use polyester blend socks instead.
5. Over striding is inefficient and leads to injuries, fix it by decreasing your step length.

Lecture attendees also learned more about the Running Performance & Research Center at Drexel’s Parkway Health & Wellness, and the technology and research the center uses to improve a runner’s form. During an appointment, experts video-analyze the runner’s performance and provide information on how to improve their form, add to their distance and prevent injuries.
The Center also offers a training program and injury review, nutrition analysis and metabolic testing that includes aerobic capacity, metabolic rate and bone density. The Center has a complete staff filled with physical therapists, biomechanists and nutritionists who work with runners of all levels.
