First-ever Educational Use of Cesarean Section High Fidelity Simulator

Students from Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions and College of Medicine participated in an interdisciplinary cesarean section simulation in the Center for Interdisciplinary Clinical Simulation and Practice (CICSP) on April 30. The C-section high fidelity simulator prototype, named “C-Celia” was developed by Dr. Robert Buckman and brought to the CICSP by Dr. Owen Montgomery, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Drexel’s College of Medicine. It was the first time that C-Celia was used in an educational simulation.
C-Celia is the first life-like manikin of its kind, earning first place in the Saving Lives at Birth category for the Grand Challenges in Global Health Grant in July 2011. The simulator prepares health professionals for what they will see in the operating room and can be set up to create difficult birthing situations including bleeding ruptures and lacerations, a baby in a difficult position and a hysterectomy.
