Kids at 11th Street Get Glasses Just in Time for School

September 25, 2014

On the morning of August 29, optician Martin Langdon visited the Stephen and Sandra Sheller 11th Street Family Health Services Center with some very special cargo. Langdon was on site to deliver sets of new prescription glasses to school-aged children whose vision had been tested at the health center during the previous week. Thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles’ Eagles Eye mobile, kids in the community had an opportunity to have their eyes checked before the start of the new school year.

After the Eagles Eye van made its visit to the health center to conduct vision screenings and frame try-ons, prescription orders were processed. Langdon returned to 11th Street to distribute glasses to participating children and to instruct them on proper care.

The Eagles Eye mobile serves the Greater Philadelphia Region, visiting both schools and health clinics to conduct vision screenings. Within approximately ten days’ time, the organization works with VIP Optical, via Partners in Vision, to produce two pairs of glasses per child (one regular and one backup pair). The children also receive a hard shell protective case and cleaning cloths for both pairs of glasses.

11th Street Glasses 2Langdon works for VIP Optical, the lab that produces prescription glasses for Partners in Vision. He says that he has always been interested in mission-driven work via a mobile unit, and that he is honored to help kids get the glasses that they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
