Jean MacFadyen, PhD, an assistant clinical professor in the Advanced Role MSN Department, traveled to Cambodia during the September term break, screening over 160 people for hypertension and diabetes. She worked in villages, located east and north of Phnom Pehn, identified by the supporting NGO organization with which MacFadyen’s trip was affiliated. Based on the information obtained in the screenings, a decision will be made as to how to best intervene and treat and minimize continued incidence of the diseases. 

“Excellent opportunities exist here for graduate and undergraduate nursing students and faculty to gain experience in health care in the developing world,” said MacFadyen, who in addition to screening patients also conducted an assessment of the bioengineering needs of a hospital in Phnom Pehn. “The opportunity here for nursing is to have an interdisciplinary, global experience with the bioengineering department,” she ended.
