Rising nursing sophomore Pelagia “Peggy” Papathomas presented her poster, “Sources of Measurement Error in Evidence Based Research,” as part of the Pennoni STAR Scholar Program at Drexel University on August 28. Her research studied the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that can cause inaccuracies in the data collected for a study.

“A neurologist from the Drexel College of Medicine stressed not only how important this already is, but how important it will become as more and more researchers strive to participate in ‘evidence based’ research,” Papathomas said.

Ellen Giarelli, EdD, an associate professor in the Division of Graduate Nursing, was Papathomas’ mentor throughout the project. Because Papathomas’ project was conducted as part of an ongoing nursing research project at Hahnemann University Hospital, her poster will be included in the Magnet Hospital Report in April 2014 as evidence of ways that nursing staff collaborate with the College to promote evidence-based practice. It will also be submitted for peer review and inclusion in the Annual Meeting of the Philadelphia Magnet Consortium to be held in June 2014.

Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions Gloria Donnelly, PhD will also be sharing the student’s poster with the CEO of Hahnemann University Hospital. View a PDF of Papathomas’s poster here.
